Skateboard Survey Results

Here are the results from the HAIA survey about the proposed skateboard park. There were 52 responses to the survey. Notice that questions 6 and 7 have percentages that do not add to 100%. That is because those questions offered multiple selections to the respondent.

Please address all questions about the survey to HAIA-SF@YAHOO.COM.

  1. several of the comments within the survey suggest that they would prefer a farmers market at this location. Park & Rec has stated that the 2 are not mutually exclusive and that in fact the skate park is being designed with a large plaza area in front of the skate park that woudl be able to host a farmers market. (My understanding is that the skate park will be situated closer to the police station and the open plaza would be right off Stanyan.

  2. We are pleased that the results of the skateboard park survey have been tabulated and that it is now clear that the overwhelming majority of HAIA members do not want a skateboard park at Waller and Stanyan.

In light of these results, we are wondering what HAIA's next steps will be. Historically, when HAIA members have made an explicit determination on a topic, HAIA has then made the various salient government agencies aware of where HAIA stands on that specific issue.

We, therefore, hope that HAIA will soon be sending out either an email or letter to our District 5 supervisor, the Mayor's Office and Phillip Ginsburg, the director of Rec and Park along with anyone else that the HAIA board determines should know of HAIA's position regarding the skateboard park. We also think it is important to have the HAIA membership cc'd, so we are aware what has been sent and when.

We also feel since HAIA has specifically asked members not to use the message board to express their opinions regarding a skateboard park that a HAIA skateboard task force should be formed so those members who have a strong interest in the subject can get together (not unlike the former Whole Foods task force). Then, once we have formed our task force, we can send periodic email updates in order to keep the not so interested HAIA members informed, yet not overwhelmed.

We do feel one important point of clarification needs to be made. In the August 27th, HAIA email to members, it was stated that:
"...Nick Kinsey of Park & Rec at our meeting last week to provide a general status update. Nick explained that Park & Rec is currently in the process of selecting a designer for the skatepark and that once a specific design firm has been chosen, there will be several open community forums to get neighborhood input. The goal of these forums is to come up with a design that works for the community... "

Members of HAIA have been repeatedly told that we would have more than sufficient opportunities to give city officials our input on whether we wanted a skateboard park at Stanyan and Waller or not. Never once were we told that we would simply be asked what design we would like to see at that site. Asking us what design we might want, when we have not been asked if we wanted a skateboard park or not is incomprehensible. Could you please clarify how this can be and why?

    Sincerely,

Marianne Hesse, Don Smith, Doerte Murray, Inge and David Nevins, Norm Larson, Barbara Super, Andrea and Elie Amaraggi

  3. If the skateboard park does go in, can it be designated a 'drug free zone' and be more heavily enforced since kids will be using it?
